Mel Products MelPAX Kit #2 - Auxiliary Colors
Mel Products MelPAX Kit #2 - Auxiliary Colors

Due to variance in the display of color across different monitor types, color swatches may not be an exact match to actual product. Use for reference only.

PAX was originally invented by the legendary Academy Award Winning SFX Artist, Dick Smith, and refers to a formulation of acrylic based adhesive and acrylic based paints or pigments.  MelPAX is an advanced performance product, created by the Emmy Award Winning team of artists at MEL Products, to work with a variety of old and new generation SFX materials used in the industry.

MelPAX is a colored makeup paint with a unique texture that offers a highly durable and flexible wear finish that can be used on both skin and foam appliances.  Unlike other commercially made PAX formulas this one is less tacky when dry, and with strong adhesion that resists cracking or peeling in wear.  It's made with cosmetic grade pigments to create a smooth liquid texture that can be used full strength for totally opaque coverage.  Or, it can also be thinned down with MelPAX Thinner, MM-1504, to create translucent washes of color or glazes, and without reducing the adhesive quality and strength of the PAX color.

Best of all, MelPAX colors can be intermixed within the complete line to create an endless array of custom colors for your needs.  PAX is perfect to use in creating both base undercoats and building complexion tones on foam appliances, especially mask work, or to create fantastic looking character looks.  It's great to use for finishing bald caps, or in body art work, even painting animatronic skins.  It's the go to product for waterproof, rub-proof, and sweat-proof coverage over tattoos and skin disfigurements.

MelPAX can be sponged on or brushed on, and colors can be layered over each other for striking detail where needed.  Once it's completely dry and finished it needs no further touching up or re-application, and it will not smear in wear.  MelPAX is also flexible paint, so it moves or stretches easily with the prosthetic to which it is applied.  When thinning down MelPAX to create color washes or glazes, use only MelPAX Thinner, MM-1504, to mix them down with, and to achieve the desired intensity.  MelPAX Paints can also be applied through an airbrush, and can be thinned up to 50% with a specially made MelPAX Airbrush Thinner, MM-1505, for the desired consistency.  MelPAX Thinners are specially made for MelPAX Paints to keep the integrity of the PAX formula's adhesion and performance.  Traditional cosmetics can also be used on top of the MelPAX application if desired, and once the final layer is dry and set.

NOTICE TO BEGINNER/NOVICE ARTISTS:  If this is your first time using a PAX paint, you made a great choice with MelPAX!  At PPC we always try to give as much professional information on our products and in this case it is particularly important to know the following basic points when working with this type of paint:

* All PAX paints laminate completely onto the surface of foam appliances, and possibly other materials, so it becomes a permanent part of the prosthetic.  Make sure this is your desired end result before applying PAX paints to your prosthetics.
* All PAX formulations remain somewhat tacky to the touch when dry, and some brands are much stickier than others.  MelPAX is a lower tack formulation, so a light dusting of no color powder is all that is needed to set the  final dry layer.
* Make sure you allow the final PAX layer to dry completely before powdering it down.  You can use a hair dryer on low heat to help dry the paint faster.
* Powdering is the important finishing step for a PAX application.  We recommend using a powder loaded puff for this, PPS-0297, so that you get a more thorough application.  Dust away any excess powder with a large powder brush.
* Never ever apply a thick layer of PAX to the appliance or skin, as it will end up with excessive wrinkling wherever movement is seen.  It's far better to use thin layers, like washes or glazes, which give gradual change when building the look.
* Technically, you can use water to dilute PAX Paints up to a 50% ratio, but using water will greatly reduce the adhesion and performance of the paint.

PRO TIP: Use MelPAX full strength when applying an appliance "warm up" base coat color, and stippling it on thinly with a cosmetic sponge.  Then, thin down any other colors you will be using with MelPAX Thinner, MM-1504, until they are translucent washes of color.  Make sure each application layer is thoroughly dry so that you have smooth and even layering.  Thinned PAX is great to use for extrinsically coloring gelatin appliances too.

For Professional Use Only.  Always shake bottles well before and during use.  Do not ingest.  Keep bottle tightly closed between uses to avoid drying out.  Do not use product on skin that has open or oozing wounds.  If irritation occurs, discontinue use.   Paint and Powder Cosmetics is not responsible for the buyer or end user's application use, or misuse of product.  Use at your own risk.
