Graftobian Crepe Wool Hair
Graftobian Crepe Wool Hair

Crepe hair is made from mohair wool fiber and comes braided into lengths of "rope".  Besides it's use for facial hair, it is also very popular with costume designers to make inexpensive wigs because it can be made to look as authentic as human hair, and is easy to adjust in color, length, and volume during styling.

When using crepe wool unravel a small section at a time, or only what you need from the braid, and cut to the desired length.  The hair will be very curly/kinky when you first unwind it and must be straightened out if you don't want it to remain that way. There are several methods used to straighten crepe wool hair:

1. You can run very hot water over it in the sink or shower and hang it up to to dry. The weight of the water will pull the hair straight as it evaporates. You can speed up the process with a hair dryer but the results won't be quite the same as if you air dried it.

2. Wet hair can be force dried by ironing it with an iron set to 'wool'.  Warning: use an ironing cloth over it to be careful not to scorch the crepe hair.

3. It can also be unraveled and ironed directly without wetting it.  Put it between two damp towels when ironing.  It may have a slight crimp to it with this method but test first. You can also try using the steam setting.

As a frame of reference only: a modest length beard with moustache takes at least 1  to 1 1/2 foot of crepe wool, depending on how full or long you want the beard.  We suggest using Graftobian Spirit Gum, MM-1049, to apply crepe wool to the skin.  You can also use Graftobian Clear Liquid Latex, MM-1032, or TraumaSkin FX™ Acrylic Vinyl Liquid Medium, MM-1284, to adhere the hair.

Tips in applying crepe wool hair:

  • Always use a thin coat of adhesive for best results, and work small areas at a time.
  • Press hair onto adhesive with tools, such as the end of a makeup brush or other dowel-like tools, rather than your fingers. Adhesive is very sticky, and your fingers would pull away the hair.
  • Each thin layer of hair should be layered over the previous section of hair to cover desired area and build thickness.
  • Trim beard and moustache to the desired length. For realism, the hair should be sparse and evenly applied.
  • Use a small towel or cloth to press against the laid hair on skin to "set" it into place and absorb any excess adhesive.
